Why Mediamax is planning to sack many employees, tough economic times!

Mediamax has announced the reorganisation of its staff structures in a move that may see a number of employees lose their jobs in the media house.

The acting CEO Ken Ngaruyia stated that the measure was necessitated by the recent economic downturn and loss of its major revenue streams.

He stated that some positions would be abolished as part of its cost-cutting measures.

“In view of the above, the services of some of its employees will be rendered superfluous thereby necessitating the termination of their employment on account of redundancy.

In accordance with the provisions of Section 40 of the Employment Act, No 11 of 2007, Mediamax Network Limited hereby gives one month notice of the intended redundancies,” Ngaruiya explained.

Employees whose positions will be declared redundant will be given one month notice or alternatively be paid one month salary in lieu of notice.

The media house’s HR policies provide for the laid-off workers to receive a severance pay at the rate of fifteen days pay for each year of service.

“Further the affected employees will be paid their salary for the period up to and including the date of termination and all accruing benefits, including any leave days earned but not taken,” the statement concluded.

3 terror suspects gunned down in Mombasa

Police have gunned down three terror suspects at Dudus area in Likoni, Mombasa County.
The Tuesday morning raid was carried out by Recce Squad and anti-terror police officers.

According to eyewitnesses, the heavily armed officers arrived in five vehicles in Dudus.

The officers sealed off the area with area residents milling around to catch a glimpse of the dead suspected terrorists.

Meanwhile, police have arrested one of the masterminds of the Dusit D2 attack which happened on January 15, this year.

Fawaz Ahmed Hamdun was apprehended by a multi-agency team on Sunday night in Majengo area, Mombasa county.

The suspect is reported to have been smoked out of his hideout in Majengo.

Apart from planning the Dusit D2 attack, where 21 people were killed, police say that the suspect was also involved in the recruitment of Kenyan youth into the Somali terrorist group, Alshabaab.

COTU boss Francis Atwoli warns politicians opposed to BBI

Central Organization of Trade Unions (COTU) Secretary-General Francis Atwoli has hit out at politicians opposing the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI).

Speaking on Monday when he toured Kisumu, Atwoli said that failure to support the initiative might plunge Kenya into violence after elections.

“When you find a politician saying I will not support BBI, that is the most stupid leader on earth. If we don’t support BBI we are going to fight. Kenya will go through another sad moment which is not in the interest of anybody,” he said.

Atwoli argued that some politicians are like hawkers who never understand where they belong, urging them to be principled like President Uhuru Kenyatta and ODM leader Raila Odinga.

“Kenyan politicians are like hawkers, today they are saying this tomorrow they say that. None is principled maybe President Uhuru who talks less and Raila who says it as it is,” he added.

The COTU boss toured the lakeside city to address the issue of the Tom Mboya Labour College. Atwoli said as COTU they have embarked on the massive renovation of the facility which will see it become a world-class workers college.

“We embark on a massive renovation of Tom Mboya Labour College. The facility is going to be a world-class workers college where all courses in East, Central and South Africa will be conducted here both long term and short term,” he said.

The trade union boss said Sh500 million has been set aside by the government for the renovation project.

Royal media boss Simaloi Dajom Otieno quits

Royal Media Services (RMS) Deputy Director in-charge of Radio has called it quits from the media house after 16 years.

RMS announced Simaloi Dajom Otieno’s departure noting that her final day at the S.K Macharia owned media house will be on Friday, October 4.

It is, however, not clear where she will be heading to after her decorated 16 years career at the RMS.

“An excellent colleague and trusted leader, we are all sad to say goodbye but happy for the brilliant opportunity that has come her way. Her last day here will be Friday the 4th of October 2019,” read part of the statement by RMS.

The Royal Media Services also announced that Ms Dajom will be replaced by Vincent Kimani, who has been in-charge of the Mount Kenya cluster of radio stations owned by the RMS.

Simaloi Otieno started out at RMS as an intern and later on became a Radio Producer, News Anchor, Programs Manager and Deputy Director- Radio, a position she has held for the past six years.

Also leaving the RMS is Business Executive Lilian Kerubo of Ramogi Radio Direct Sales.

She announced her exit from the Kilimani based media group in an email she sent to all members of staff.

“I’d like to bid farewell to you all since I’m leaving my position as Business Executive- Ramogi Radio –Direct Sales, tomorrow being my last working day at RMS. The experience that I have gained here over the years is immeasurable and I thank God for the opportunity He gave me to work with you all,” she said.

Their departure comes a day after rival media group the Mediamax announced intended redundancies owing to the tough economic times and loss of major revenue streams.

Most wanted Dusit D2 Al-shabaab militant arrested in Mombasa

One of the most wanted Al-Shabaab operatives linked to the DusitD2 complex attack that claimed several lives was on the night of Sunday, September 29, arrested.

Reports indicated that Fawaz Ahmed Hamdun was busted in his house in Majengo, Mombasa, by a multi-agency team.

He was accused of facilitating the DusitD2 attack at 14 Riverside Drive as well as being involved in the recruitment of youth into the Al-Shabaab.

This comes eight months after the terror attack that left 21 dead which the insurgent Al-Shabaab claimed responsibility.

Hamdun, 28, allegedly played a key role in facilitating the re-entry of DusitD2 suicide bomber Mahir Riziki another wanted culprit, to Kenya from Somalia to execute the attack.

He allegedly coordinated Riziki’s journey from Somalia and facilitated his stay.

Salim Fariz Hadin who went missing from Majengo on September 8, reappearing in Somalia. His travel was also suspected to be facilitated by Hamdun.

However, video footage obtained by detectives showed the two strolling in Mombasa on the day the latter’s family reported he had disappeared.

The devastated parents circulated posters and made reports to human rights organisations about their missing son.

Hamdun has also been linked to the ‘Ramadhan Kufungwa’ radicalisation network at the Coast, which targets the youth for Al-Shabaab recruitment.

The police had earlier linked Riziki to the recently slain Ngombeni gang leader and suspected terror operative Mohamed Rashid Mwatsumiro, alias Modi.

Modi was shot dead on August 30, after engaging the elite Recce police officers in a shootout at his house in Ngombeni, Kwale County.

Nyamira MP Jerusha Momanyi dumps DP Ruto for CS Matiangi’s team

They say that a week in politics can be equated to a year and that politics depends on how much your interests are catered for by the master.

For Nyamira Woman Representative Jerusha Momanyi, the last six months have seen her go through radical metamorphosis, arguably the most talked about in Nyamira.

Early this year, Mrs Momanyi was chief campaigner for Deputy President William Ruto in Gusii region and a close ally of the country’s second in command.

In June this year, when Dr Ruto visited Nyamira, Mrs Momanyi insisted that the DP remains the most ideal candidate to take over from President Uhuru Kenyatta.

“Your Excellency I want to assure you that you will win in this region. We have seen what you’ve done and nothing will stop us from backing you,” he said.

But barely after one week, Mrs Momanyi joined Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr Fred Matiang’i’s camp, with the minister believed also to get eyeing presidency.

With at least three Nyamira MPs still allied to DP William Ruto, only Mrs Momanyi and Borabu MP Ben Momanyi are supporting Matiang’i’s bid.

On Saturday in Gesima, Jerusha insisted that her decision to work with Dr Matiang’i was informed by the dynamic politics in Nyamira and Kisii.

“There is that urge to have one of our own on the top and I cannot betray my supporters. We have to come together first and then discuss with those from other communities,” she said.

Dr Matiang’i trusts the Jubilee Woman Representative and in most instances, he first consults her before rolling out major development projects.

On Monday, it emerged that Mrs Momanyi played a major role in persuading Dr Matiang’i to lobby for Sh100 million for construction of Miruka and Nyansiongo markets.

Mother, 4-year-old daughter dead bodies not retrieved so far, SAD

The bodies of a woman and her 4-year-old daughter are yet to be found over 36 hours after the Likoni ferry tragedy.

Mariam Kigenda and her daughter Amanda Mutheu were the occupants of the vehicle that plunged into the Indian Ocean on Sunday.

“The search for the vehicle and victims is ongoing after beefing up the rescue teams. Red Cross team is on site offering psycho-social support to the family at our island offices. We will give updates as the salvage exercise continue,” the Kenya Ferry Services (KFS) said on Monday.

Reports indicated that KFS has hired a private company, Subsea, to help them locate and recover the vehicle and the two occupants.

Managing Director Bakari Gowa said the Kenya Navy had initially conducted a search but were unable to get the exact location of the car so they will now be working jointly with Subsea.

“This is not the first incident, in most cases you will realize that we have managed to retrieve the vehicle,unfortunately for this situation, the vehicle plunged in the ocean almost in the middle of the channel,” he said during an interview with KTN on Monday night.

He added that the search was halted as divers could not work in the dark but they would resume the operation on Tuesday morning.

The saloon car that was onboard the Likoni ferry reversed and plunged into the ocean on Sunday at 6:15pm.

On Monday, Kenyans took to social media criticizing KFS over its alleged lack of preparedness for such incidents.

“The Likoni ferry incident is disturbing and points to general lack of preparedness for accidents and emergencies. Why on earth did a car reverse unnoticed ? It means these Ferries are floating disasters,” Makueni Senator Mutula Kilonzo Jnr said.

“Loss of beautiful souls; Mariam Kigenda and her four year old daughter Amanda Mutheu. The Ferry services should have better safety measures and a more efficient response team. May the departed Rest in Peace,” Agnes Kagure added.

Amos Njoroge posed: “Whether the driver engaged reverse, whether the ferry had no divers, I only have one question; why wasn’t the ramp raised? That just might have saved the car from going overboard.”
