Kenya’s Likoni ferry madness

I am not upset. I am not even sad. I am just numb.

Twenty-four hours later, a mother and daughter are still trapped in the chilly deep of Likoni Channel. Their bodies lie in those dark depths; dead.

They remain suspended inside their car: floating, swaying gently at the slightest push of underwater currents.

We know their names. Mariam and Amanda. Lovely names. Mother and daughter. They were together at birth; they still are; in death.

I have not watched that harrowing clip. I can’t. Not if I am to remain sane. But I don’t need to. I have been in that car. In my head; in my dreams.

I know Mariam; mother. She is a law-abiding citizen. The car is fully insured. Her driving license is valid. All her safety belts work.

She has never been arrested for speeding. She never overlaps. She never overtakes on a continuous line. She pays all her taxes. On time.

She registered for Huduma number. She opened her door to census officials. And she took all her 1000 notes to her bank.

Mariam is you and me.
I know Amanda. She is scared of the dark. She mumbles while sleeping. She hates broccoli. She loves teletubbies. Her mother calls her Amy because Amanda is too long.

Amanda is your daughter and mine.
Mariam boards the ferry as she has done many times before. She carefully parks the car and kills the engine. She makes sure Amanda is properly strapped in baby’s seat at the back.

She checks on the harness. It’s in place. Amanda is safe. From the rear view mirror, she sees the ramp is down.
She frowns. She feels slight flutter of panic.

‘Did they forget to pull up the ramp?’ she wonder. “What if…’ But she can’t complete that thought. The what-if is too frightening.

The ferry lurches away. She signs with relief. She turns to check on Amanda again. The little girl is sleeping. It’s been a long day. Soon they will be home. A shower maybe. Then a long rest. She smiles. Her mind drifts away to plan ahead.

Then there is a terrible lurch. The car moves. At first, she has no idea what is happening. Then she feels it. The car is moving.
Before she realizes it, there is a terrible crash; the sound of her car hitting the ocean waters. Her mind is on automatic shutdown. It can’t register she is no longer inside the safety of the ferry.
In the waters, the small car rises and falls. It lists and flounders. The powerful sway of the gentle waves turns the car around. It’s as if the waves are wondering what an alien object with two humans is doing in these waters.

Another powerful waves rocks the car. The engine hisses, noses down before the car rights up.
Mariam is not screaming. She can’t. Everything has slowed down. Time has stopped. She sees through the eyes of a sleepwalker.
The water is streaming in through the miniscule holes in the floor; through the door cracks; past the window sill. Not a lot.

Just enough to know the car is taking in ocean water. A strong wave slams the car. It rocks violently. A huge spray drenches her windscreen.
Terror rips through her paralysis. She screams.
At the rear seat, Amanda jerks awake. She finds herself in unfamiliar place. She is disoriented. Wide-eyed; terrified. Her mother is screaming.

The little girl tries to move; to reach for her mother. She can’t. The harness holds her back.
“Mama!” she calls, hands stretched out.
At the call, Mariam stops screaming. She reaches back for her daughter. She can’t. Her safety belt is too tight. She strains. Nothing.
A powerful riptide hits that car and almost overturns it. Miraculously, the car rights itself; barely. Not for long. It’s sinking. Her daughter is still calling out for her. Her voice is fading.

From the foggy windscreen, Mariam catches a dim glimpse of the ferry disappearing in mist of sea waters. Standing on the railings are hundreds of people with cellphones; recording her death.
Water streams in. It’s now up to her chest. She knows with certainty she is going to die. There is no panic in her; just quiet resignation. There is no pain; just regret. Amanda will not visit Haller Park in next year’s birthday.

From the back seat, Amanda has fallen silence. Mariam hopes she has gone back to sleep. The water rises to the neck level.
From outside, comes the sound like strong wind across leaves of a dense forest. Mariam thinks it’s a speedboat with divers coming to her. Only it’s not. It’s tons of water rushing in the car. The car sinks.

High up at the surface, ferries continue to crisscross the channel; uncaring, unfeeling.

Somewhere in the sunny Mombasa, Kenya Ferry honchos relax in air-conditioned offices, swinging on swivel chairs with legs resting on padded tables, sipping coffee. It’s just two deaths. Unfortunate but negligible.

Somewhere in cold Nairobi, honchos at the National Disaster Operation Center and National Disaster Management Unit are planning on taking a holiday to Dubai.

Amanda and Mariam are not a national disaster.
They are no-bodies who accidentally became famous for falling from a defective ferry! Why would anyone in their right mind mobilize government resources to drain Likoni Channel to locate bodies of no-bodies?
Overtime, they will float. Or perhaps not. Either way in our uniquely Kenyan way, we have moved on.

At least Kenya Ferry Services has. They have said all is well. They will now serve us with four ferries. And an extra one at Mtongwe.

Only in Kenya.

Thieves: 8 Pupils arrested for stealing 23 laptops in Migori county

Police in Awendo have arrested eight primary school pupils alleged to have stolen 23 laptops at Yago Primary School.

The eight were accused of stealing gadgets delivered from the Ministry of Education to boost the Digital Literacy Programme at the school.

According to reports, the laptops allegedly disappeared from the head teacher’s office. Police acting on a tip-off from recovered 11 gadgets and arrested eight pupils on Tuesday.

Awendo Education director Yashon Magara said police arrested the Standard Six and Seven pupils as main suspects observing that the pupils were going to help police in recovering the gadgets that are still missing.

While confirming the incident, Awendo police boss Jacob Waluke stated the minors will be arraigned for burglary and theft of government property once the investigations are completed.

“We are treating the minors like any other suspects based on the accusations and exhibits in our possession,” he communicated.

It was suspected that the students were colluding with parents to steal devices meant for learning in schools.

This is not the first incident of similar thefts in schools. In 2018, police also arrested three students who were accused of stealing 32 tablets from Lukova Primary School.

After interrogations, the officers managed to recover 29 of the stole gadgets alongside other projectors, laptops, and tablets that was estimated to cost more than Sh1.8 million.

The laptops were a project of the Jubilee government when it came to power in 2013. So far nearly 80% of Kenya’s primary schools have already received the gadgets with the Ministry of Education expressing confidence in the improvement of ICT learning among primary school kids.

Inside tycoon political wars in Kibra, Ruto vs Kibicho vs Muhoho

The race for the Kibra Parliamentary seat keeps getting interesting as the days go by with each camp putting in the much needed work in campaigns to try convince the electorate to vote them in come the d-day.

The battle to succeed the late Ken Okoth has however not been rosy for all the parties involved as aspirants and various political outfits keep attacking each other in a bid to reign supreme over the other.

It is also worth noting that the three leading candidates in the race: Imran Okoth of ODM, Jubilee’s Macdonald Mariga and ANC’s Eliud Owalo are all ‘flexing their muscles’ as they all stand a great chance heading to the November 7th By-elections.

The trio have been touring various parts of Kibra but what is not known to many is the fact that they all have special people in the higher ranks of power backing their bids.

For starters, ODM’s Imran Okoth is said to be banking on the support of Interior PS Karanja Kibicho, a man who is known not to be a great lover of Deputy President William Ruto. Kibicho has allegedly been financing Imran’s campaigns and has also ordered government officials within Nairobi to do all it takes to ensure that Imran will emerge the winner come November 7th.

Reports indicate that Kibicho is for a Imran win as he believes that he will keep pushing his late brother’s legacy and also help cement the relationship between Raila and Uhuru Kenyatta.

Away from the Kibicho-Imran ‘collabo’, Eliud Owalo is also said to be getting major support from the Kenyatta family through Uhuru’s brother Muhoho Kenyatta.

Muhoho believes that the no-nonsense Owalo could be used to help deal with Deputy President William Ruto or Raila Odinga should the trio fall out at some point.

Owalo’s recent outbursts directed towards both Ruto and Raila have been attributed to his strong links with Muhoho.

It is believed that Raila’s preferred candidate heading into the ODM Party nominations was Peter Ochieng Orero.

Orero however lost to Imran in what is believed to be a well calculated move by influential people within ODM.

According to KahawaTungu, Imran, who was the CDF manager during his late brother’s tenure as MP, used the CDF database to know the registered ODM members and as such got an upper hand over his rivals.

ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna is also believed to have had a hand in Imran’s victory. The ODM Supremo ensured that a number of ODM members did not cast their votes in areas that were considered to be Anti-Imran and with that he (Imran) emerged victorious.

Away from Imran and Owalo, the Mariga fever is slowly catching up with a number of politicians and Kibra residents. There is no doubt that Mariga is DP William Ruto’s preferred candidate.

The DP is out to ensure that Mariga brings the seat to Jubilee at all costs. Ruto sees the Kibra by-elections as a perfect ground to discipline Opposition Chief Raila Odinga politically.

Ruto has invested his resources on Mariga and has been able to neutralize the ODM effect in Kibra. Mariga is able to hold mega rallies attracting mammoth crowds without fear of being disrupted by goons all because he is close to Ruto who control’s a number of state machinery.

Well, with the look of things, all the three top candidates in the Kibra race have people in the high places having their backs. It remains to be seen who among them will be picked by the people of Kibra come November 7th.

Before then, let the games continue. Sit back, relax and enjoy as everything unfolds on the political grounds.

DP Ruto exposed for launching ‘ghost’ projects without knowledge of line ministry PSs

A House team has put Deputy President William Ruto on the spot for commissioning a Sh5.3 billion ’empty’ Lower Nzoia Irrigation Project without involving the parent ministries.

On June 7, the DP went ahead to launch the irrigation project that cuts across Siaya and Busia counties at a time the line ministries claimed the whole project was a mere skeleton and not ready for the launch presided over by Ruto.

The controversial project is aimed at boosting rice production and preventing destructive floods. It covers Ugunja, Alego Usonga and Budalang’i constituencies.

The three agencies at the centre of the implementation of the project told the Public Accounts Committee on Monday it was inappropriate to launch a project when the acquisition of land had not been settled.

The agencies also noted the project was not at the stage that it could be launched given it had many gaps that had to be fixed before any possible commissioning.

Water Principal Secretary Joseph Irungu, in what seemed like a classic case of the right hand not knowing what the left hand is doing, said the ministry was not aware of the DP’s plans.

“Had I been asked, I would have said we hold on as we had not compensated anybody in Siaya and it was not proper to go on with the launch,” Irungu told the committee.

“I am not able to confirm that the CS was contacted because there was no formal communication,” Irungu said of the presence of Water CS Simon Chelugui who was the only high ranking official accompanying the DP.

Chelugui, a former Jubilee Senate aspirant in Baringo, is a close associate of DP Ruto.

Ruto has previously come under fire for his zeal in launching development projects, with critics saying it’s a political tactic for his 2022 presidential bid.

However, David Mugonyi, communication secretary at the DP’s office, dismissed the assertions and said Ruto is the country’s second in command.

“The DP went there for inspection and he is the Deputy President of Kenya. Again, the officers were on the ground,” he told the Star.

NIB CEO Gitonga Mugambi who also attended alongside Chelugui said he was instructed by former PS Fred Sigor to attend and was not doing so on behalf of the Board.

Courage: NTV airs controversial ”sins of savior” expose after being stopped

In another turn of events, NTV was on Tuesday, October 1, blocked from the airing an exposé minutes before broadcast.

This was the second time the station has been barred from broadcasting the feature dubbed Sins of Saviours. The feature was set to air during the Tuesday Prime Time news at 9pm.

The order issued by a court blocks NTV from publishing the exposé on any of their media avenues.

Earlier on, the intial ban had been lifted after a month-long battle granting the media station the green light to air the feature on Tuesday, October 1 at 9 pm.

The feature that was aimed at exposing government officials who were exploiting children touched on the improprierty of the Child Welfare Society of Kenya (CWSK).

In court documents, the organisation had accused NTV of infringing on the rights of the minors even after the station gave them (CWSK) a chance to respond to the investigation’s findings.

On Monday, the court also dropped another application that sought to arrest and detain Edmond Nyabola, Mark Maasai and Managing editor Emmanuel Juma.

The media house claimed that had been investigating CWSK and had received damning evidence pointing to outright embezzlement of public funds at the expense of the children.

However, during the probe that involved speaking to those responsible, including the CEO of CWSK Child, Irene Mureithi threatened the station and sought the intervention of the court.

“She left no doubt that she is prepared to do everything and anything to ensure the story does not air by making unethical or virtuous to us, claiming she knows people in high places.

“When all that did not work, she mischievously went to the children’s court, and using falsehoods and assumptions, got orders on Friday, barring us from airing the feature, Sins of saviours, this Sunday,” Nyabola had stated.
