Strongmen come and go. Every regime in Kenya had its own fair share of powerful individuals who had the President’s ear. They ruled by proxy. They were the real power behind the throne. They pulled strings and determined the destiny of the country. During Jomo’s reign there was Mbiyu Koinange. Mbiyu was not boisterous and loud. He was quiet and unassuming but was very close to the seat of power. He was Minister of State in the office of the President, a thorough and highly educated man.
Eliud Mahihu, the then Coast Provincial Commissioner was another member of the kitchen cabinet. No wonder Jomo Kenyatta used to spend a lot of time in Mombasa, breathing his last in the coastal city.
It is this group that attempted to block the then Vice President, Daniel Arap Moi from ascending to the Presidency in the event of the President’s demise. This Kikuyu the elite working under the banner of the Change the Constitution Group tried very hard to block Moi and install one of their own. The likes of Kihika Kimani and Dr. Njoroge Mungai, the President’s personal physician and a minister were at the centre of this scheme. Their tribal designs were thwarted by the then Attorney General, Sir Charles Njonjo, the London educated Aristocrat, who believed in everything English, including language, mannerisms and dress code. His black stripped suit was his trade mark. He had no time for tribal bigots and psycophants. When Moi took the reigns of power he rewarded him with the powerful ministry of Justice and Constitutional affairs. He later fell out with the President and was kicked out unceremoniously. He never recovered.
Nicholas Kipyator Biwott called the shots during Moi’s era. His small frame and frail voice were deceptive. He was a shrewd and cunning politician who effectively used his proximity to the President to amass wealth and abrogate power to himself.
He was nicknamed the ‘Bull of Auckland’ for allegedly trying to rape a woman on one of his numerous trips abroad. Of course the matter was spoken in hushed tones and the allegations never saw the light of day. Other powerful individuals during Moi era were Hezekiah Oyugi, the Minister of State in charge of Provincial Administration, Ezekiel Bargetuny, Mark Too, Joshua Kulei, Kariuki Chotara, The illiterate Mulu Mutisya and Moses Sabstone Mudamba Mudavadi.
During Kibaki’s Presidency, Chris Murungaru was very powerful. He was the Minister of internal security. His imposing frame and thunderous voice scared the wits out of miscreants. David Mwiraria who oversaw the Finance ministry also wielded real power. John Michuki, he of the ‘if you rattle a snake expect to be bitten’ fame also enjoyed sweeping powers, which he largely used for the benefit of the country. I am thinking of the Michuki rules which brought sanity on our roads and his efforts to tame the dreaded Mungiki sect.
Other members of Kibaki’s kitchen cabinet included Francis Muthaura, head of civil service and secretary to the cabinet, Francis Kimemia, internal security, Amos Kimunya, the ‘ I would rather die than resign’ fellow. During the coalition government, these guys were used to frustrate and emasculate Raila, ensuring that real power remained with Kibaki.
Now we have Aden Duale, loud mouthed, boisterous, belligerent and fire spitting. He makes a career out of attacking Raila. That is how he endears himself to the powers that be. He even has the guts to threaten a member of the Judiciary on account of his tribe and rulings! Duale must be reminded that the Judiciary is an independent arm of government and does not answer to the Executive.
Power brokers come and go. Raila has been around long enough. The wannabes who tried to bring him down are long gone, and forgotten, struggling in political oblivion. Duale should tone down and do what his electorate and the Constitution mandates him to do. He will be lucky to maintain this enviable position next year, even if Uhuru wins. History has shown that such politicians only last a term. Uhuru’s second term (God forbid) will usher in new power brokers and spin masters. Duale will be relegated to a mere flower girl struggling to get the President’s ear. He is not in Raila’s league and will never get anywhere near Raila, a respected personality who wines and dines with world leaders!

Former Cabinet Minister and veteran Maasai politician, John Keen, is dead.
Mr Keen died at the age of 86 after a short illness.
Mr Keen was a vocal defender of the Maasai Community and served as the Kajiado North Member of Parliament for over ten years.
He passed on Sunday, December 25 at 3:00am at his Karen home after suffering a heart attack.
Mr Keen was unwell for some time and had recently travelled to South Africa for medication.
Born to a German father, Keen was among the biggest land owners in the country and sensitized the Maa Community on the importance of defending their land.
In September this year, Mr Keen was admitted at a Nairobi Hospital after suffering health complications.
Several leaders including Opposition Leader Premier Raila Odinga and Wiper Movement’s Kalonzo Musyoka and Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) commissioner, Thomas Letangule, visited the veteran politician.
Last year, Mr Keen became one of the biggest beneficiaries in the expansion of city road network in a multi-billion shilling sale of land to the government.
He was also a defender of wildlife conservation. In 2015, he donated a 300-acre piece of land to the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS), which he named after his daughter, Silole.

The gallant HB women rep turn ODM giant comrade Gladys Wanga arrived in the hallowed chambers to be ambushed by a Jubilee terrorist wannabe pirating himself as Tigania East MP Mpuri Aburi.
Unbeknown to Mpuri, Gladys has a black belt and can use one hand to fight 17 men of Aburi’s caliber. Gladys also has has Judo skills and can just catch Aburi like a poorly prepared idiot and throw him down the way John Cena did to Edge. She is also blessed with arms that can land a thunderous paralyzing slap on the cheeks of an opponent.
So Mpuri throws the 1st punch, Wanga dodges. He throws a second poor punch traveling at 1km/hr-which landed on Wanga’s chest…and the 3rd which lands on Wanga’s stomach. It’s at this point that Mpuri discovered what the donkey saw in the BUR BALA. Wanga arrested Aburi with one arm, slapped him thunderously with the other, then caught his balls & squeezed for 3000 seconds, then threw him down like a sack of charcoal, before the ODM brigade landed on Aburi like a swarm of wicked bees.
He was panel beaten like those sufurias in kamkunji—including his ears,teeth,tongue and toes. When he woke up 65 minutes later, he asked his Jubilee comrade “is my nose there…is my eyes there…is my mouth and stomach there…did any airplane enter my ears”…As Wanga was leaving, Moses Kuria saw her and ran away screaming “mimi sina shida na wewe boss”
I interrupt my Christmastide to cheer the death of Hon. Aburi’s third leg. News reaching my desk is that he has been flown to unknown destination as a medical tourist, where doctors will frantically work overnight to fruitlessly try to resurrect blood flow in the little John which died successfully. According to renowned medical experts, Aburi’s case is now an incurable fait accompli, his condition is beyond medical science.
He is now a confirmed Eunuch. However, there is still hope in urology, where his organ can be changed into a female organ complete with a ‘hairport’ where planes can land and take off. I salute the Homabay ODM giant who throttled Aburi’s little John into paralysis. I told you if you want to eat a frog, choose a fat one, and Aburi is now a man eating his frog in pieces. In my luo we say “kaipuro njugu, to njuki emaimuodo”, Aburi next time don’t try to touch the anus of a leopard with your finger, you see now!!!!

Broke Eldas MP avoids Wajir County .
The silence of the Eldas Member of Parliament Hon Aden Keynan has left residents of Wajir county of worried as to what exactly happpened to the over-confident, full of drama MP. Even his online supporters are stranded for lack of instructions from their master.
Word in the high streets of Nairobi has it that the MP may have lost close to 100million through gambling. Hon Keynan is said to have diverted all his telephone numbers and therefore unreachable to many of his supporters.
The outspoken MP was conspicuously absent during the homecoming party in Wajir of his preferred Gubernatorial candidate Ambassador Mohamed Abdi last week.
The flamboyant MP who carries himself as the county King maker walked out on Governor Hon Ahmed Abdullahi during this year’s Jamhuri day celebrations in protest following fierce heckling by the locals for his continued undermining governor Abdullahi’s development agenda.
It is believed that the one time flamboyant MP is extremely broke unable to foot his own bills and thus going underground to avoid his supporters. Being broke has made the MP a target of Statehouse operatives who are keen on drafting any Somali leader to campaign for Uhuru. Northrn Frontier region is largely an opposition stronghold.
The MP has been previously accused of misusing the privileged Public Investment Committe to blackmail corporate and head of parastatols.
