Police now claim they arrested Nyakundi following a complaint by Mombasa Gov. Ali Hassan Joho in 2014 (so they are reviving the case, using Joho as a bait to harass the popular blogger)
This is a masterstroke in two ways. One, it comes at a time Joho is a ‘hero’ of many CORD supporters. The ploy is to ‘expose’ Joho as being anti-bloggers (whatever that means) and intolerant.
The second issue here is that Nyakundi for a long time was apolitical. That is to say, he didn’t expressly support CORD Agenda online (though he leaned more toward CORD).
A few weeks ago; however, Nyakundi had expressly been pro-CORD, something Jubilee online gang noticed.
With over 600 thousand followers, Nyakundi easily trends anything on Twitter. And because he is politically conscious, that combination is lethal for any online messaging.
So a few days ago; they started cooking him up. A story appeared on Ghafla news blog how Nyakundi exhorts money from running exposes. Then the arrest.
Since yesterday, Twitter has been on fire and ‘Free Nyakundi’ was a top trend. Naturally, nowadays, when a blogger is arrested, for whatever reason, people rally behind him (or her).
Because Jubilee is increasingly arresting people for the flimsiest of reasons, shouting for someone to be ‘freed’ is away of pushing for the reasons of his/her arrest to be publicly known, and where he/she is being held -that’s if indeed it’s the police who’ve done the arrest – to also be known.
So Kenyans rallied behind Nyakundi. Then a few minutes ago, an official from the DPP’s office has revealed he is being held in relation to a tweet he posted which apparently ‘defamed’ Gov Joho.
Governor Joho has indicted he complained long ago (early last year) and had forgotten about the whole thing until this morning when police informed him they arrested the ‘suspect’.
I don’t know how this should go but I hope it ends well.
I hope the good governor will seek to resolve the issue out of court.
Jubilee has its own issues with Nyakundi which they are now conveniently using Joho’s complaint to resolve.
