President Uhuru has this morning opened the second State House Summit focusing on Infrastructure where the President’s almost fifteen minutes speech delved on the challenge of fighting corruption in government.
A fortnight ago, the President held the first summit on Energy.
During today’s summit, the president repeatedly urged his audience, mainly government bureaucrats in the transport, ICT and trade sectors to stop corruption, wondering how a road leading to his village could be constructed to highway standards when all it carries are lorries of tea leaves – light weights.
“Jameni, si hiyo ni njama ya kuiba pesa,” posed the President. (Surely, is that not a way to steal money).
Critics wondered why the President is still begging his bureaucrats to stop graft when no much is being done in terms of prosecution. Since taking power, the President has not sacked any official on graft; although public pressure has forced a number of officials to resign.
The President also dismissed claims that his pet project – the Standard Gauge Railway – is a white elephant and a waste of taxpayers money. Economists and financial institutions like the World Bank and IMF have often given negative reviews of the SGR.
Responding directly to these concerns, the President urged participants to focus on the projects, saying the same institutions opposed infrastructural development of some Asian countries who are today economic powerhouses.
