Here is Babu Owino’s “BROWN ENVELOPE” award winning message on school fees increment

The Kenya University Students’ Organization (KUSO) expresses its solidarity with all parents and students across Kenyan primary and secondary schools in their fight against fee increments. The students from across all social, religious and political backgrounds have united under one mission to demand that ‪#‎FEESMUSTFALL‬.

We welcome the unity of spirit by all parent organizations against the fee increments and again reaffirm the centrality of the Constitution that education is a right and not a privilege available only to the rich and opulent sections of Kenyan society. This demand is long overdue particularly in a country with a long history of corruption and mismanagement of public funds. The triumph over corruption and mismanagement of public funds is futile without the guaranteed access to quality education. In fact, any human freedom is not sustainable today without quality education.

The Minister of Education, Dr.Fred Matiang’i is also nowhere to be found as our parents are stranded and struggling to make ends meet for their children to report back to school .He is held up in luxurious hotel meetings drinking expensive wine, whilst students are suffering with their future hanging on the string due to expensive school fees. All Matiang’i knows is political gossip and ideological buzzwords used to fight KNUT and KNEC demagogues.

KUSO also places blame on school principals who have done nothing to agitate for affordable quality education. They have protected and promoted the commercialization of education because it benefits their huge salaries and bonuses.

Finally, we demand that the government through the Education ministry addresses this unnecessary burden of fees once and for all. We also call on all progressive education stakeholders to break away from the myopic leadership of Dr. Matiang’i and commit themselves through their actions to the spirit and letter of the Constitution of the Republic of Kenya in giving effect to affordable access of quality education to all Kenyans.
