The Coast General Hospital is now fully equipped to offer brain surgery and microsurgery.
The hospital which has received a massive facelift with modern high tech medical equipment has been the lifeline of at least five coastal counties including Kwale, Kilifi, Tana River, Lamu and Taita Taveta.
To offer brain surgery, the hospital recently constructed a fully kitted neurosurgical theater and has employed a resident neurosurgeon.
It also boasts of the highest number of specialist doctors in the region.
With a 700 bed capacity and nine theatres, Coast General Hospital is now the largest hospital in the entire coast region.
On maternity, the hospital sees an average of 50 deliveries daily, including some 20 caesarean section cases.
The modernisation project is a flagship project of Mombasa County government with officials saying the dream is to expand the hospital to a 2000 bed capacity referral facility and a medical training institution for the region’s public university medicine schools.
