Governor JOHO’s STATEMENT on SGR; Mombasa Port to be Relocated to Naivasha

THE STANDARD GUAGE RAILWAY; THE LOSS OF A BIRTHRIGHT IN THE TALE OF TWO CITIES. (MOMBASA & NAIVASHA)

When the Standard Gauge Railway was conceived under the Kibaki/Raila administration, it was a moment full of joy and promise for kenya. It was born with every stakeholder in mind. The benefits and losses were balanced fairly throughout the country of Kenya. The future was full of limitless possibilities.

But it has now become a bitter pill to swallow. Especially for the coastal people’s and Mombasa. When the Jubilee regime came to power, their ascension became our misery. The best of their time is now the worst of ours. Their “spring of hope” has become our “winter of despair”.

That a modern railway was due in Kenya is not the question. The problem is that the obscene inflation of the price under Jubilee has made it too expensive for kenya. To cater for this cost, the jubilee administration has had to provide a number of guarantees to ensure the réalisation of this project. Key amongst the guarantees is that they have mortgaged the economic future of Mombasa. The port of Mombasa. Our birthright.

We would like the people of Kenya to know, we are a city at risk. Not only have they concessioned away the port of Mombasa in secret, the SGR will kill the city. Like the children of the biblical Isaac, one of us has sold his brothers birthright.

Key amongst the guarantees that have been conceded by the GOK for this project to come to like are

a. Financial Guarantees

1. A “Take or Pay” contract with the Kenya Ports Authority. This means if the KPA cannot provide certain amount of goods, they have to pay the Chinese Exim Bank the difference.

2. The Railway Development Levy 1.5% RDL, this is a charge levied on ALL goods passing the port of Mombasa to satisfy the 10% local financing of the project.

3. A sovereign guarantee was issued by the National Treasury, Government of Kenya guaranteeing this loan.

b. Non Financial Guarantees

1. A Dry Port in Naivasha to move port operations.

2. A special economic zone in Naivasha to create new source of goods for the railway.

3. The disregard of the current concession with the old railway.

4. The privatisation and concession of the Port of Mombasa to private players to seek efficiency.

5. The guarantee by compulsion of goods from road traffic to rail at a higher cost

Consequences of this project are

1. The immediate loss of Jobs for over 7000 current port employees, their dépendants and affiliated businesses

2. The death of all port related business in Mombasa. From Trucking, Loading, Clearing and forwarding, Warehousing, logistics and others.

3. The arrest of all logistics-related future development

4. The death of related logistics cities and towns along trucking routes on Nairobi-Mombasa highway.

In the light of this, we hereby demand that

1. That the government release the terms of the contract with the Chinese Exim Bank, the details of disbursement and attendant relavant information

2. The Government of Kenya release all details of the Take or Pay contract between KPA and the financiers? What is the goods threshold and the responsibility of collection of the these fees.

3. Due to conflicting reports, the government clarify in details all charges related to goods and their destinations.

4. The government clarify the method of nomination of goods for rail and the point and implementation of charges.

5. The government clarify the extinction date of the Railway Development Levy on goods and come clean on the amounts collected since.

6. The government release the terms of the port concession, all monies paid and the details of the contract

7. The the Government clarify the details of site selection of Naivasha as a dry port. The feasibility study and the project appraisal report.

8. That the government release the “Willingness to Pay” survey of the goods for meant for railway and the feasibility report of the proposed Naivasha Special Economic Zone.

9. And that the Jubilee government show us their plan for Mombasa.

I wish to reiterate to the people of Mombasa and the coast at large, I will not have performed my duty before God and the people if I do not stand firm against this issue. I pray that you stand by your leaders as we seek to determine what future our country holds for us.

I wish to declare that you are the determinant of that future. You have a choice. On 8/8/17, make the right choice. Vote for Raila Amollo Odinga and Kalonzo Musyoka. Thank you

My Thoughts on SGR Launch; What We Should Aim For

By Silas Nyanchwani

In the autumn of 2011, I was part of a dozen students from the University of Nairobi’s Literature department that were taken to Germany on a sponsored tour by DAAD(German Academic Exchange Service). It was brief tour, but the most astonishing thing was that schedule that was sent to us a month early was honoured to the last second.

The tour took us to three cities in Germany: Hamburg, to the North, Berlin, in the middle, and Dresden, on the far East. We shuttled through the cities using a train and what an incredible experience that was. Germany has arguably one of the best public transport networks in the world and punctuality is an absolute necessity to Germans, it can be annoying. There was nothing else I enjoyed or envied about Germany, more than that public transport. It is perfect to the second. I have also lived in the States, New York no less, but the New York subway is a too archaic, chaotic and virtually dysfunctional on weekends. But you still appreciate the days when it works, however bad. I will take the messy New York subway over our matatus any day.

The resource that white people utilize the best is time. Time is greater than gold and every precious mineral that gets people killed in DRC. In the West and in deed in all the first world countries, people can control their time, hence their destiny in life. Productivity levels are ten times higher, than Africa because the public transport is reliable, and security is assured.

This morning, I missed the 7.08 train from Imara Daima by 2 minutes. The Syokimau train is one of the lesser acknowledged functional things in the country. Had I made it to the station in time, I would have been in the CBD by 7.35 a.m. I missed it, and I had to walk to the bus station at GM. There isn’t even a bus station at GM, on the lane that goes to town, Matatus have to jostle on the sidewalks in acrobatic fashion, all the while in running battles with the police. It took me 20 minutes to get there (good exercise though), but for missing the train, I paid with an hour of my life in traffic. The other option was to wait for the 9.15 train.

Anyway, I elected to use a matatu, you can’t do anything meaningful in a matatu that is playing ragga. Or Maina Kageni (I’m a fan of Maina Kageni by the way), but the noise is really annoying, the seats too crumpled, and the level of comfort: zero.

Those who use public transport cannot control their time. The rains, the traffic, the unpredictable manner of the traffic police (you never know when they will arrest you for not putting on a seatbelt in a matatu that has none), matatus changing routes without notice, leaving in the middle of nowhere. The vagaries of public transport are endless, carjackers, pickpockets anyone! You can never be flexible in your approach to life.

But imagine if we had a light rail in Nairobi and traffic was virtually non-existent. The Imara Daima train carries about 1200 people a trip. Those are at least thirty, 36-seater minibuses, or 85 small 14-seater minivans. Imagine if we opened more routes, Kikuyu, Thika Road, Donholm, Kibera. We bought new or refurbished the old coaches. Make the railway system clean, reliable, and they work all day and night!

Nearly 75 per cent of the people with cars, will not use their cars if a)the train system worked and the coaches were super clean, b)security was guaranteed c) the trains worked 24-hours.

When people can control their time, they become more productive. You can take extra jobs. Someone like me can report to my workplace on Mombasa Road, key in the 6 hours, hop into a train go to a college I teach, key in the 4 hours, and hop onto another train go check on my businesses, or my consulting, or enjoy a drink in town.

Imagine many people who have to do one job, because movement in Nairobi during the day is practically impossible. How much talent is bottled up in the traffic jams, or holed in offices, way after the working hours, Facebooking…

If we built a light-rail in Nairobi before the SGR, it would have been ten times more useful and would have added as much as 12 billion a year (probably more into our economy). A study by IBM a few years ago, showed that we lose as much as Sh 1 billion a month in traffic jams (fuel, pollution, time wastage, arriving at work already tired and unproductive). I think it is more.

If I leave work at 5 p.m, with hopes of getting to town in time for a few drinks with friends, but spend two hours between South C and Nyayo stadium, only to get to town three hours later three things will happen: a) my friends will probably give up and leave, b) when I get to town, we will only grab one drink and go home to our wives c), we have spent less than we would have spent if it took me 20 minutes to town.

If I get to town by 5.30, and say we are four of us, we can have 4-5 drinks each so as to leave by 8 p.m. But if you get to town by 7 p.m, you will have one or two. So the VAT the government would have made from the consumption is lost. The bar will not make as many sales to warrant job creation. Expand this to other sectors of the economy.

In short, when people move, monies changes hands. When people move faster, money changes hands faster, and the economy grows even faster.

Now to the SGR. Thankfully, despite being scandalously overpriced, and we will pay for it for the rest of our lives, I’m thankful. Part of the reason, I have not been to Mombasa in like 7 years, is that I’m freaking afraid of buses, and I can’t afford a flight. But a train is a good incentive for me to travel to Coast, as frequently as I can. And many will find travel because of the ease and reliability.

The coaches were underwhelming, when they unleashed them on us. Diesel locomotives in 2017 is a bit anachronistic, but I’m hopeful, we will upgrade in the future. Like Jaindi Kisero in today’s nation, and Macharia Gaitho yesterday, I support the SGR, despite graft and other queries. As Jaindi suggests from Naivasha, it should go through Maasai Mara, through Kalenjin land, to Kisii, to Luo Nyanza and Luhyia, and I dare say that we should also connect to the further North and North Eastern. Other communities in Kenya “should also eat from land compensation deals” as Kisero aptly puts it.

I really would have loved to see in my lifetime, a time when I can hop into a train and go to Turkana, Marsabit, Lamu and every far corner, nook and cranny of this country. Traveling by road is restricted to necessity. Air transport in Africa is prohibitive. Train transport makes travel more fun.

Whereas, there was plunder during the Kibaki era, at least there was some level of quality in the delivery of projects. Thika Road, going to Kisumu via Nakuru-Kericho is a pleasurable experience. Even in Kisii, we got some good roads and a few more places in Kenya. SGR, we got a raw deal, but for now, it is an historic occasion, let us not rain on Uhuru and Ruto’s parade.

Its economic benefits will be felt, in the days to come as long as the rich mercenaries who own trucks do not conspire to kill it like they killed Kenya Railways.

Even the people who oppose it, will in the end see, it was not an entirely useless exercise. Long after Uhuru and Ruto are happily gone, we will still use it for the next 100 years.

It is something to be happy about, even if we got a raw deal.
It is better than those painting the sky blue projects that were the stuff of Goldenberg and Anglo-Leasing.

Valid Criticism IS Patriotic; Sycophancy is PRIMITIVE. Uhuru Should Not Punish Joho

By Dorcas S

Was it Scotsman Samuel Johnson who argued that “Patriotism is the last refuge of the scoundrel” in his piece “The Patriot”?

Mr. Johnson was referring to those citizens who wax eloquently about patriotism and nationalism, not out of genuine concern for country, but to advance their agenda – personal and/or economical.

It is a thought that struck me as I read about/the varied reactions to President Uhuru Kenyatta’s trip to the G-7 in Italy and subsequent invitation to the G-20 later this year.

The optics – on the world stage – were indeed good for the former crimes-against-humanity pariah and his supporters have every right to revel in them. Likewise, Kenya’s image on the global stage, like that of its globe-trotting president, has been a mixed bag – oscillating between respect and high regard to the shoulder-shrugging “there they go again with the corruption and violence!”

It is this ambivalence between respect and lack thereof – of Kenya and Kenyans – that has been at the core of reactions to Mr. Kenyatta’s address before the G-7. Predictably, those who see the event as “proof” that Mr. Kenyatta is “the man” have wrapped that perspective in the flag of “patriotism” and “nationalism”. The support would be in line with the adage that “politics ends at the water’s edge” i.e. you don’t criticize the president when s/he is abroad; beyond the shores of the country. However and ironically, said support would be for the same man who chided the opposition for “inviting a visitor (Barack Obama) to the house (Kenya) and starting to quarrel with the spouse” back in 2015 BUT had little compunction flipping that script on its head and accusing Kenyans of being “experts at abusing one another and stealing” – while he was visiting Israel!

So at the heart of my reluctance to embrace the patriotism and reverence typically accorded (the accomplishments of) the president who is THE symbol meant to unify a country besides the national flag, is the flippant and blatant disregard and abandonment of that very patriotism and reverence when it comes to (the president’s) use of the country’s national resources including its wildlife, forests, minerals and treasury! Gabriel Oguda absolutely nailed it when he excoriated those hyper-ventilating over vandalism on sections of the SGR and are pin-drop silent when billions line the pockets and bank accounts of Nyokabi Muthama, Kathleen Kihanya and the First Lady’s “Beyond Zero Initiative”.

The foregoing hypocrisy is the behavior that Samuel Johnson was calling out.

There is nothing unpatriotic speaking out against the amount of money spent on Mr. Kenyatta’s foreign jaunts since he took office especially when people are starving and dying BECAUSE of corruption- and incompetence-induced “lack of money”.

It IS patriotic to question the return-on-investment (ROI), cost-benefit not to mention probity of the mega-projects and “deals” supposedly “inked” during President Kenyatta’s foreign junkets; this is particularly true when members of the presidential entourage include the likes of Chris Kirubi and other industrialists and “moguls” of ill-repute and deals shrouded in secrecy.

To paraphrase the words of German theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer: “Silence in the face of possible evil is itself evil: Not to speak is to speak. One can disagree with and refuse to support (the policy proposals of) a leader and still be patriotic.

The construct of voicing opposing views or criticism, indeed demanding explanations or justifications on major socio-political and economic decisions AND loving country are not mutually exclusive as Mr. Kenyatta and his supporters would like Kenyans to believe.

STATEHOUSE PLOT Exposed: IEBC official Met Uhuru, Agreed to BLOCK JOHO Gubernatorial Bid

STATE HOUSE PLOT UNCOVERED: IEBC TO BLOCK JOHO 2017 BID

Kenya Today last night unearthed a conspiracy plot incriminating the newly appointed Mombasa County IEBC Returning Officer one Ms Veronica Wanjiru in a plan to block Mombasa Governor Ali Hassan Joho bid for second term in office by rejecting his nomination documents during vetting stage under the pretext of state probe into Joho’s academic background

Wanjiru secretly met with President Uhuru Kenyatta at State House Mombasa soon after the launch of the Standard Gauge Railway during which time she was given strict instructions to carry out the mission to use her official powers to stop Joho in exchange for state protection and reward after the lapse of the election vetting process.

The meeting held with consent of top IEBC officials and attended by senior state house mandarins resolved to give Wanjiru full support in order to satisfy Uhuru’s long running political feud with Governor Joho in which the president has variously vowed to ensure that Joho’s meteoric political rise is brought to a halt by whatever means necessary. IEBC Chairman Wafula Chebukati, a constitutional office holder, has been briefed of the developments and has yet to give direction on the matter.

Kenya Today could not reach Joho or any of his aides for comment.

More follows.

FINAL WORD on SGR by NASA Supporter, Congratulates Raila for Foresight, BLASTS Uhuru for TURNING it UPSIDE DOWN

On SGR.

As a NASA supporter, I wish to congratulate President Uhuru Kenyatta as he is set to Launch the SGR tomorrow.

Personally, I wasn’t against the Idea of SGR and I thank Eng. Hon. Dr. Raila Odinga for his foresight knowledge that Kenyans needed the project.

I had hoped that the over 500,000 Cubic yards of Concrete and 100,000 tons of steel used in the project would have been sourced locally, hence creating the much needed Jobs for the Kenyan people.

As the huge project comes to an end, I am disappointed that it created more Jobs in China and to the Chinese than in Kenya and to the Kenyans, as 94% of the raw materials used in the project was sourced in China.

I am also sad that rather than put Dry ports in parts of Kenya that are in dire need of economic empowerment like Ukambani, Jubilee chose to locate the Dry Port in the Land of the President’s family in Naivasha.

I would have preferred for their appreciation, that the Chinese Contractor build a school in Kiambu or Othaya, than pulling down and rebuilding a the multi-billion house for Uhuru Kenyatta in Nairobi as they are doing now.

All in all, the child has been born. I would have liked the Child to be born at Nairobi hospital and not in London to save the family some money, but I celebrate the Child anyhow-though the financial obligation of this unnecessary excessive spending will linger with the family for decades to come.

I hope that the launch is successful and that all the 15 head of states and dignitaries invited for the launch show up.

And yes we hear that after the launch, the first commercial services of SGR will actually be on 01/01/2018, We congratulate Uhuru anyway.

Congratulations Mr. President for both the new house and SGR. Kenyans can at least now take a holiday and see some Chinese serving in SGR hence promoting Local Tourism.

In 1833, Abraham Lincoln tried a new business, and failed.

In 1835, Abraham Lincoln’s fiancée died.

In 1836, Abraham Lincoln had a nervous breakdown.

In 1843, Abraham Lincoln ran for congress and was defeated.

In 1848, Lincoln ran again, and was defeated. Again.

In 1855, Lincoln ran for the Senate, and lost.

In 1856, Lincoln ran for Vice President, and lost.

In 1859, Lincoln ran again for the Senate. He was defeated.

Then, in 1860, Abraham Lincoln was elected President of the United States.

What matters most is not how many times you fail, but that you never stop trying.

Governor JOHO Drops BOMBSHELL on 100Million SCANDAL In the New SGR deal with China

Hassan Joho has threatened to expose the President if he does not account for the extra Sh100 million for the SGR before its launch.

Joho, who is Mombasa Governor and ODM deputy leader, said he will storm the launch “as has happened before” if Uhuru Kenyatta’s Jubilee administration does not give answers

The Governor accused Uhuru of “oiling the wheels of corruption at the expense of service delivery”.

“If they think they are going to get away with the SGR, the same way they got away with NYS after swindling our money , they are daydreaming,” he said in Siaya town on Monday when Senator James Orengo presented his nomination papers.

Joho reminded Kenyans that the Standard Gauge Railway project was budgeted for in the Grand Coalition Government under former President Mwai Kibaki and former PM Raila Odinga’s leadership.

“The project was to cost not more than Sh200 billion but the Jubilee government is telling us it has cost more than Sh300 billion. We deserve answers before the launch.”

Two weeks ago, the President secured an additional $3.59 billion from China to extend SGR from Naivasha to Kisumu.

Joho further warned the government against taking Kenyans for granted, noting “they packed a ship at the Coast with maize and hoodwinked Kenyans about importing maize from Mexico”.

“Such are the political gimmicks we need to tame by kicking this government out of office come August 8,” he said, adding numerous court orders will not stop him from criticising the government.

The county chief has been campaigning for ODM leader Raila Odinga, who is NASA flag bearer, and his running mate Kalonzo Musyoka of Wiper.

Joho asked Siaya residents to exceed the 100 per cent plus voter turnout mark so Raila can win the election. He warned that if they do not do this, they will continue “wallowing in the high cost of living” after the poll.

FINALLY Raila Agenda to LOWER RENT Explained, This is HOW NASA will Cut Rent Without Affecting Landlords

The Policy of Affordable Housing (Rents) in Kenya under NASA and President Raila Odinga.

Nairobi, May 30th 2017. Author: Hon Kenneth Okoth, MP

The quest for affordable housing is a realistic pro-people agenda in the NASA manifesto that can be accomplished in five clear steps. It will promote social well-being, create jobs, and stimulate the economic growth of Kenya in a more equitable way. Here is what needs to be done to realise this worthy goal.

1. Subsidize the landlords and investors building rental homes for low and middle income families. Kenya government subsidizes importers of choppers, Brazilian sugar, and Mexican maize; why not local builders of rental homes for Wanjiku? National Housing Corporation and National Construction Authority to be revamped with enhanced resources, mandate, and targets for financing and construction of affordable housing in partnership with county governments and private sector.

2. Lower the taxes levied on building materials and costs of construction and promote innovation in use of local materials and job creation in the construction sector. Streamline regulatory framework and guidelines for easier processing of permits to build more affordable rental housing. Eliminate bureaucratic hurdles, corruption, and hidden costs that make doing business in Kenya a nightmare.

3. Regulate and negotiate mortgage rates for real estate investors and individuals; allowing owners to pay back their loans faster and enjoy returns on their rental investments.

4. Regulate rents in market segments where PPP (public private partnership) approaches have been used for affordability.

5. Implement comprehensive slum-upgrading program with new construction technology like in Malaysia and India.

Mt Kenya, WHAT WILL YOU LOSE If You Vote for NASA Raila/Kalonzo? NOTHING !

Kenyans, What the Hell Do You Have to Lose Voting for NASA’s Raila/Kalonzo Ticket?
By Dorcas S
Both President Uhuru Kenyatta and Raila Odinga have been cleared to compete in the August 8, 2017 General Elections by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) after successful presentation of their nomination papers this past weekend.

Presentation of the certificates marked the beginning of the end of the race for State House and the outcome of the race, regardless of who wins, is in the hands of you the voter. Additionally, the reaction/response (joy of victory or agony of defeat) to the outcome will be up to each individual voter, independent of what either principal (RAO or UMK) tell me or tell you.

On a personal note, if as I hope, Raila Odinga carries the day, I will celebrate like I did back in November 2008 when America elected its first African-American/Kenyan POTUS. I will then set me eyes on him and hold his feet to the fire like I have done with the incumbent Mr. Kenyatta.

If on the other hand Uhuru Kenyatta garners re-election, I will mope around and gripe for a while – like I did when DJT pulled the improbable back in November 2016 – over Hillary Clinton. I will then straighten up and go back to work – holding him accountable like I have done since he escaped the claws of Fatou Bensouda back in 2015 and before.

The one thing I will NOT do, regardless of who wins or loses, is destroy property or more importantly, destroy personal relationships.

To paraphrase Barack Obama, the sun will rise on November 9, 2017 whether Raila Odinga wins OR loses. Similarly, the sun will set the evening of November 9, 2017 whether Uhuru Kenyatta wins or loses.

The foregoing aside, this race is NOT a choice between a glass that’s half-full or one that’s half-empty. It is about the blatant manipulation of the taps that fill the glasses – for political and financial expediency – by those in power no less – and their family and friends.

The choice between Uhuru Kenyatta and Raila Odinga is NOT between the “devil you know” and the “devil you don’t know” as some would have us believe. It is between two “devils” – Uhuru Kenyatta and Raila Odinga – Kenyans know only too well and their body of works – over their public lives.

One was born with a silver spoon in his mouth and comported himself likewise while using the resources of the country like his family’s bank account. The other, also born of means, chose a path of public service oftentimes by any means necessary. Kenyans are poised to have a Constitution-driven democratic elections thanks to his efforts AND sacrifice.

The race is a choice between what we want as a society as embodied by the two leaders we are about to choose.

Do we want a demonstrably corrupt and unaccountable “devil we know” incumbency or a demonstrably less corrupt “devil we know” who is also a demonstrable agent of change and is desperately needed to shake up the currently ossified and moribund status quo?

Back in 2013, Kenyans decided to stick it to “the man”, to those “foreigners” who arrogantly told them that “choices have consequences”. The country voted for the coalition of crimes-against-humanity suspects who promised to “digitize” the country past the “analogue” corruption and ethnocentric incompetence of yesteryears. They were told that they would have food on the table, access to basic healthcare and safe and secure communities. They were also told that Mr. Kenyatta and Mr. Ruto were going to be incorruptible because they “both had their own money” thanks to membership in the country’s richest family AND the work ethic and ethos of a “hustler”.

At the risk of repeating myself, the results are in for Mr. Kenyatta and his running mate William Ruto. The two have presided over the most corrupt government in Kenya’s 50+-year history; one that is equally incompetent and unaccountable. So to borrow a line from Mr. Trump, let me ask this of Kenyans:

What the hell do you have to lose voting for Mr. Odinga and Mr. Musyoka come this August?

– Your families are hungry because of poor planning and corruption,
– Your current president, his family and his deputy are all corrupt,
– You are not safe in your homes nor on your streets thanks to rampant insecurity and trigger-happy law enforcement,
– You don’t have access to basic healthcare, in part because of malfeasance by the current president’s sister and his cousin,
– Unemployment is sky-high even as you fight for jobs with those you’ve been told are “partners” and will “train and transfer technical skills” to Kenyans.

The way I see it, better Raila – the “devil you know who is a demonstrable agent of change” than Uhuru – the “devil you know who has proven to be corrupt, incompetent and unaccountable”.

WHO IS Raila Odinga?

By Jackson Omondi

Imagine life as a son of a former vice president of the Republic of Kenya, the opulence and prestige that comes with it, the sense of entitlement abound, the aura of I-am-better-than-you that we see in the offsprings of today’s political royalty and yet, Raila chose to buck that trend.

When his peers chose the high life, the young Raila chose a path less travelled. He took a curious path. A path that many folks in his age bracket considered too complicated and nerdy. It was a path that was not only dangerous but also daring. He had Kenya in his mind.

Having witnessed state intimidation by way of his father’s house arrest and getting a ten-year stint in detention that earned him the title of Kenya’s longest serving detainee, Raila Odinga is a man who has seen it all.

Not too many people can fully function minus ten years of productive life. It’s unfathomable! BUT somehow, the scion of Jaramogi Adonija Obadiah Ajuma Odinga has managed to defy the odds!

Not only did he manage to forgive and work with those who put him in detention, he also embraced and worked with those who stole his electoral victory in 2007 and laid the foundation for a better Kenya! This is a man who has dedicated his life to Kenya.

While his detractors love to throw kibera slums as a shillelagh to discredit his record, they forget that a man who has given ten years of his life for his country cannot be judged by a constituency. For a legendary figure like Raila, Lang’ata was just a springboard to the national political theater where he could really focus on his real constituency: Kenya!

He needed Lang’ata in order to have a seat at the national negotiating table so that he could make the case for Kenya. And to that end, he delivered the new constitutional dispensation with devolution to boot. Save for Jubilee’s gimmicks of stifling devolution , Kenyans will be better off because of devolution and they have Raila to thank for it.

It’s also important to remember that transformational figures like Raila are rare. Asking Raila to parade job numbers as lang’ata MP is like asking the imprisoned Mandela to show his development record. Better yet, it’s like asking Dr Martin Luther King to table his job numbers during the civil rights movement. These men’s constituencies and collective cause celebres was different from your average, round-the-mill leaders. Theirs was different, they had a bigger cause, a macro-political view.

Many leaders have graced the Kenyan political theater but very few can claim to have the same impact as the enigma. Furthermore, very few can say that they put country first and mean it.

This is why political pundits and status quo agitators spend sleepless nights trying to contain Raila. They wonder why the masses adore him. “How can peasants and peons relate to a billionaire ?” they wonder.

News flash: those peons know that he is the only man who had the chutzpah to serve hard time in detention because he believed in a more freer and fairer Kenya! Kenyans are politically hip enough to separate real from fake and they go with the enigma because they can relate to his cause. After all, the out-of-touch leaders often show them the middle finger while bragging about feasting on nyama choma.

The good news for Kenya is that help is just a few weeks away!

Raila NASA Diaspora Team Supports Tallying of Presidential Votes at Constituency Level

As Raila Odinga’s Presidential campaign liaison team from the diaspora, we congratulate the High Court judges Weldon Korir, Aggrey Muchelule and Enoch Chacha Mwita who declared null and void, the law that required presidential election results to be subjected to alterations at the national tallying centre.

The ruling last month shows the respect the judges accord the rule of law, constitutionalism, democracy and fairness in the electoral process.

It should also be remembered that, the tallying of votes at the constituency level will allow Kenyan voters to own the process and witness how their votes are counted rather than leaving the crucial task to the top IEBC officials.

As Raila Odinga’s campaign team in the diaspora-USA, Canada, Asia, Europe and the Gulf States, we could like to acknowledge the UN special rapporteur Maina Kiai, Khelef Khalifa and Tirop Kitur, who challenged the archaic law which left the Presidential election results in mercy of top officials of the IEBC.

We now challenge Mr. Wafula Chebukati, the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) boss and his team to come clean on their motives for challenging the ruling made by the 3 judges.

Kenyans are tired of constitutional bodies siding with the Executive instead of acting as neutral bodies to safeguard national interests.

Majority of Kenyans in the diaspora support the 5 NASA, Raila Odinga, Kalonzo Musyoka, Moses Wetangula, Isaac Ruto and Musalia Mudavadi for their stand in announcing Presidential election results.

“We want to remind the (IEBC), that the demand by NASA to have the results declared at the 41,000 gazetted polling stations countrywide, as the final results in the Presidential election is in tandem with the law and, any move to alter it will be a travesty to democracy and the spirit of free, fair, credible and verifiable election.” Said Mr. Fred Osewe of the Raila campaign diaspora team based in North Carolina.

Why is the IEBC getting accolades from the Jubilee government after filing an appeal against the court ruling?

We have seen many government operatives like Majority leader Aden Duale openly siding with the IEBC after the appeal. Even President Uhuru Kenyatta and his deputy William Ruto have openly shown partisanship in the manner the electoral body is conducting its activities.

“We wonder which interests the IEBC is serving when Kenyans expected the electoral body to portray neutrality in the management of an election. “Kenyans cannot condone any acts of omission or commission that might submerge the country into another post-election fiasco like the one experienced in 2007.” Said Joseph Lister Nyaringo, on behalf of Raila odinga’s diaspora liaison campaign team.

We want to remind Kenyans that, a society which fails to learn from past missteps will never heal or build new structures for improvement… The repercussions of a bungled election are in the public domain.

The relaying of final results from constituencies under the supervision of returning officers, agents, the media, internal and external election observers is the most transparent way of managing an election. Any steps to reverse this will be a tragedy to the country.

In advanced democracies like the USA, votes are tallied at polling centres where the media captures the results as they trickle in. We need to promote this type of system in Kenya because of its authenticity and accuracy.

The system will also ensure that, returning officers, election observers and agents are key in safeguarding and upholding a free and fair election.

One will wonder how Kenyans will trust the IEBC Chairman, Wafula Chebukati’s work at the national tallying centre but fail to trust what happens at the grass roots where the voting takes place.

It’s sad that when a mechanism geared towards safeguarding free and fair election is put in place, resistance from the electoral body and the government hits a crescendo. The jubilee government is trying to use every means to manage the election for a favorable outcome.

We have also noted with concern that besides the IEBC legal imbroglio, the Cabinet Secretary Joseph Nkaisery, is extremely biased against members of the opposition in the current election season.

The interior CS has in the past threatened NASA leaders with arrests merely because they are critical to the Jubilee government. It must also be remembered that civil servants are supposed to serve all Kenyans with impartiality irrespective of their political leanings.

Secondly, the chairman of the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) Francis ole Kaparo, has also failed the neutrality test. His public pronouncements towards NASA leaders is unfair. Kaparo, often points fingers at opposition leaders; leaving known inciters like honourable Moses Kuria of Jubilee untouched.
Finally, the injunction filed in the court of appeal by the IEBC to reverse the ruling made last month by the high court is totally in bad taste, suspect and with no merit in law and constitutionalism. It infringes upon the rights of Kenyans voters and therefore a conduit to rig the August election 8th Presidential election.

”DP Ruto BETRAYED Kalenjins, We are Being used to benefit an Individual”- Hon Korir

A group of MPs from Rift Valley who lost during the Jubilee Party primaries have accused Deputy President William Ruto of betraying them at the last minute.

Led by Cherangany MP Wesley Korir, the MPs accused Ruto of presiding over flawed nominations, adding that their supporters did not get the chance to elect candidates of their choice.

Korir said Ruto betrayed incumbents. He said he was misled by Ruto to join Jubilee, only to be dumped during the primaries.

Speaking in Bindura, Trans Nzoia county, Korir likened the Deputy President to the biblical Judas Iscariot.

“In 2013, I joined Parliament as an independent candidate, but there is one Judas Iscariot who kissed me, lied to me and later betrayed and crucified me publicly,” he said.

Korir said residents of Cherangany will get the chance to elect a leader of their choice on August 8.

He lost to State House political adviser Joshua Kuttuny.

Korir is now accusing the Jubilee government of failing Kenyans, especially farmers from the Rift Valley.

“Now that the Jubilee government has imported maize from Mexico at Sh4,000 a bag, we want to ask them to buy maize from farmers at the same price and not Sh3,000 as they have been mistreating us,” he said.

Three MPs from Uasin Gishu and Nandi counties, who refused to be named, said they were close to the DP for five years, but during the primaries, their complaints were ignored.

“Ruto took charge of the Jubilee primaries at the party headquarters and whenever we tried to complain about the flaws during the nominations, we were ignored,” the MP from Nandi said.

During the primaries, Uasin Gishu Governor Jackson Mandago, Kapseret MP Oscar Sudi and his Nandi Hills colleague Alfred Keter accused Ruto’s aides of attempting to interfere with the primaries.

The aides – Kibet Farouk and Reuben Maiyo – however, denied meddling in the politics of the region.

Some MPs who lost during the primaries have opted to go quiet and hope they will be given jobs in the government if Jubilee wins.

Early this month, Ruto met some of his allies and aides to resolve a growing row and potential fallout between them over the Jubilee Party primaries in the Rift Valley.

Mandago, Sudi and some of those who won the JP primaries in the North Rift attended the private meeting in Nairobi.

“It’s true we met the DP briefly and all he told us is that he wants peace in Eldoret and that he does not want to hear about tribal politics in the region,” an MP, who declined to be named, said.

Mandago and Sudi declined to comment on the details of the meeting. Sources said Farouk and Maiyo were at the meeting. The meeting took place as Kuttuny said Ruto had handled the Jubilee primaries well and should not be blamed by losers. In a statement, he said the decision by Uhuru to have Ruto take charge of the primaries was well-thought-out.

FINAL BLOW to Hon Peter Kenneth as Uhuru says SONKO TOSHA

Blow to Peter Kenneth as President Kenyatta says Sonko Tosha…

President Uhuru Kenyatta has hit the final blow on the political career of Peter Kenneth after he finally said Sonko Tosha in Nairobi Governor’s race.

Speaking while on a tour of the vote rich Nairobi Eastland’s area, the President urged Nairobians to shun Kenneth who is vying as an independent candidate and incumbent Governor Evans Kidero and vote for Senator Mike Sonko.

“It’s only Sonko who can deal with the problems facing Nairobi. I am sure with Sonko as Governor of Nairobi most of the problems facing City residents will be dealt with, I am therefore urging all of you to vote for him as your Governor.” said the President while addressing stop over rallies in Eastlands.

The move by the President has dealt a major blow to Kenneth who was expecting the President would not endorse Sonko.

Kenneth who recently defected from Jubilee after he lost heavily to the flamboyant Senator in the Jubilee nominations was overheard saying he hopes State House would support him to succeed Kidero by not backing the candidature of Sonko who is now the favourite to clinch the seat.

Sonko has emerged the favourite in all opinion polls to beat Kidero especially after he picked business guru Polycarp Igathe to be his running mate. A recent poll by Radio Africa Group showed Sonko would win the Nairobi governor’s race with 45% followed by Kidero with 35%. Kenneth came a distant third with 9%.

Governor Nanok STRIKES DP Ruto HARD, Tells him to STOP CHEAP LIES not befittinga a Christian he pretends to be.

Governors have blamed the national government for failing to curb food crisis and alleviate hunger.

Through the Council of Governors, they faulted Jubilee for trying to shift blame to the counties.

They said even though agriculture is a devolved function, the national government has stalled and refused to hand it over.

“Although this is an election campaign season, CoG, states that national government should not play politics with the lives of Kenyans. The national government needs to own up to its failure and not shift blame to the county governments,” chairman Josephat Nanok said.

The transfer of devolved functions in agriculture, including management of silos and grain store, procurement and distribution of subsidised fertiliser and seed did not take place as envisioned in the Constitution frustrating farming, Nanok said.

“While the national government was assuring the county of adequate grain, the state department of agriculture, livestock and fisheries had distributed bad seeds and fertiliser that had impact on harvest amounting to economic sabotage,” governors said in a statement.

They called for an explanation on why the national government did not respond to calls for restocking of counties stores with adequate maize.

The government created a price crisis, despite the early warning from drought and meteorological state departments.

They blamed the national government for the slow finalisation of agriculture policies to guide the development of the sector, as well as the development of laws that do not recognise counties as the key drivers of the development.

Nanok cited the Crops Act, AFA Act, National Cereal and Produce Board Act as some of those laws that set up departments and institutions in the agriculture sector that frustrate counties’ efforts.

“Above all, the national government has starved counties of resources to fully implement these devolved functions by declining to restructure national government agencies,” he said.

The Turkana governor said the national government, through the NCPB, should ensure there is enough grain in the stores, thus having enough locally produced maize by farmers.

Local maize, they say, should not be used as a scapegoat by any government in meeting the constitutional requirements to ensure Kenyans have enough food.

The Real REASONS WHY Raila is Running for President

By Joshua R A O

My fellow Kenyans, I come to you at the most crucial time in the history of our republic. I come to you knowing fully well that you are suffering, your voices are not being heard, you are the victims of a failed regime, a regime led by two leaders who promised you heaven and delivered the opposite.

I have witnessed your suffering and feel your pain and let me say to you that in less than three months, you will say goodbye to the Jubilee-engineered suffering, in just under three months, you will have a leader who has time for you, you will have a leader who listens to you, you will have a leader who puts you first.

Four years ago, two gentlemen came to you with grandiose promises, prompting you to act on faith and chose youthfulness over experience and while I am tempted not to invoke the words of a former leader of a country way beyond our shores who declared that he would not exploit, for political purposes the youthfulness and inexperience of his opponent, Uhuruto’s inexperience has brought nothing but pure suffering and backbreaking high cost of living to you the mwanainchi and I am here to tell you that help is on the way!

NASA will unshackle you from the dire straits that Uhuruto dumped you into and bring back the dignity in your household by way of creating more jobs, reducing the high costs of living, buttressing our economy with sound monetary policies that will reduce our debt, balance the national budget and curb inflation.

To our teachers, NASA saw the political ping pong that Jubilee subjected you to as some families were torn apart and some even lost their loved ones by way of suicide. Help is on the way. I am here to tell you that we respect what you do for our republic and my government will work with you to ensure that the collective bargaining agreement is adhered to.

To our men and women of utumishi kwa wote, I know how you feel. This government takes you for granted. You live in tin shacks and are severely exposed to danger in areas that most folks wouldn’t dare set foot. Jubilee’s reward for you has been meagre pay and poor living conditions. You are left clutching on a G3 rifle all day on an empty stomach! We can do better. NASA has heard you. My government will invest in decent housing for our men and women in uniform and review their remuneration packages.

Our nation’s doctors just endured one of the most embarrassing political stunts in the history of mankind. Unfortunately, Wanjiku bore the brunt. I promise to end the era of political stunts on the livelihoods of Kenyans who take up the noble lines of work. Labour laws must be respected and NASA will be a people-first government.

I am running for president because I have heard you calling for help, I have seen how Jubilee has failed you and I am here to tell you that their days are numbered.

Armed with a nasal drawl and a tongue of a used car salesman, Uhuru sold a utopian narrative and ended up failing in a spectacular fashion. It’s your turn to have the last laugh.

I ask you to join me so that come August 8th, we can say no to governance by PR, say no to an officialdom that brags about juicy delicacies while Kenyans are going to bed hungry, say no to imaginary development projects that only exist on web portals, say no to tribal appointments, say no to backbreaking debt that will be transferred to your kids and grandkids, say no to trash-talking leadership and say no to the most incompetent and corrupt government in the history of Kenya.

When you vote for NASA, you will be saying hallo to affordable cost of living, a booming economy, a secure Kenya, a respected neighbor ( Uhuruto have turned Kenya into a regional dwarf and laughing stock), a beacon of hope and prosperity.

For close to five years, Jubilee has been at war with your wallets and purses. It’s time to end that war by voting for NASA.

I ask for your vote.

Thank you and may God bless our nation.

………………………………………………….
The most important ingredient of any presidential campaign is the why-I am- running component. It’s the nucleus of the campaign and what drives the campaign’s message throughout the campaign period. If a candidate for President fails to articulate this key part of the campaign, then everything shuts down and the campaign is effectively still-born. In 1980, Senator Ted Kennedy was caught off-guard on national TV when a reporter asked him to articulate why he was running for president and the man known as the lion of the U.S. Senate delivered one of the most embarrassing and awkward responses ever. He had no clue why he was running for president.

That moment of humiliation, confirmed to the American people that the good senator was running for president just because he was a Kennedy! His campaign went nowhere and he ended up endorsing Jimmy Carter at the convention.

Hillary Clinton’s brain trust spent a gazillion weeks trying to come up with their why-she-is-running rationale and ended up parlaying a weak and rather banal line that opened the gates, agonizingly too wide for Donald Trump to cash in.

Breaking! Governor Mutua dumps Jubilee, apologizes to Kambas, promises to support NASA

Reliable sources indicate that Machakos Governor Dr. Alfred Mutua has regained his senses after realizing he is not going anywhere with Jubilee.

Reports indicate that Mutua realized the ground was getting hostile by the day and he’s not welcome anywhere in Ukambani. Wherever he goes, he’s booed and heckled.

Word making rounds indicate he is yet to make a public pronouncement and apologize to the entire Kamba Nation so as to recapture back his Machakos seat.

Pundits have however said it is too late for him to redeem his blemished image since the people of Machakos seem to have settled on Wavinya Ndeti.
Here is what he was forced to say yesterday at a function in Machakos after people booed him:

I withdrew my support for Jubilee and I am no longer campaigning for Jubilee or their presidential candidate. Please my people, don’t associate me with Jubilee. My heart is where the heart of my people is, and that is with my brother Kalonzo Musyoka. NASA nthinye nthinye” Alfred Mutua-Machakos Gov. 28/5/17

PHOTOS: Raila NASA Jacarada Rally FLOODED With HUMANITY- Uhuru going home by God’s DECREE

As soon after the National Super Alliance (NASA) presidential candidate Raila Odinga was cleared by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to enter the 2017 State House race, he together with the pentagon team – running mate Kalonzo Musyoka, Musalia Mudavadi (ANC), Moses Wetangula (Ford Kenya) and Chama Cha Mashinani leader Isaac Ruto –kicked off their first official campaign at Jacaranda Grounds.

Raila – who has recently been nicknamed Joshua by his followers because he promised to deliver the country from political oppression, much like the biblical character who took Israelites from the dessert to Canaan– took time paint a picture of the Promised Land that he will take Kenyans to after August 8.

Speaking to a charged crowd, Raila said that he would make the load lighter for Kenyans by reducing the cost of basic commodities.

“I want to assure you and every Kenyan out there that a NASA government will ensure that maize flour, sugar and fuel prices are lowered, taxes imposed to housing be lowered to ensure that rents are sustainable to each and every Kenyan,” said the ODM party leader.

Faulting Jubilee for mismanaging the education sector and failing to raise the basic capitation fee of Ksh.12,000 per child, Raila said that his government will prioritise the provision of free primary and secondary school.

This move, Mr. Odinga says, will ensure that every child in Kenya whether the poor or rich have access to education – something that he said is a key tool in developing a prosperous nation.

Speaking to the business community, Raila said his 5-person team has a formidable plan to jumpstart the economy , adding that businesses are currently struggling as they are operating in a hostile business environment.

Raila further stated that in NASA’s Canaan, bottlenecks were put in place to aid corruption would be a thing of the past.

He promised the businesspeople that, unlike the Jubilee era, his administration will ensure that they will not have to pay bribes to operate in the country.

“Every official wants bribe from businesspersons. Even when someone wants the police help they tell him/her that their vehicle lacks fuel, but we see the police cars driving in places where local liquor is served. My government will make sure that police force do not harass Kenyans and that they serve the interests of Kenyans,” added Odinga.

Speaking during the function, other NASA members assured Kenyans that the Opposition’s agenda for the country will ensure that they lead more prosperous lives.

They urged voters to come out in large numbers as this would ensure that Raila ‘Joshua’ Odinga would be given the mandate to take Kenyans to Canaan.

“Kenyans hate you, you are the reason why Uhuru will lose”, Kalonzo answers DP Ruto

By Albert Amenya

NASA deputy President His Excellency Kalonzo Musyoka has told Deputy President William Ruto that he is one of the MAIN reasons why Kenyans are set to send the Jubilee administration packing.

Speaking during the Nasa rally at Jacaranda grounds, Musyoka hit out at the Deputy President following the allegations he had made against him while campaigning for Jubilee in Makueni County.

The DP had insinuated that Kalonzo Musyoka was in a losing team. He ridiculously extended an olive branch to the former Vice President urging him to ditch NASA and join Jubilee.
Kalonzo said that Kenyans are tired of the Jubilee administration and they are waiting for August 8 to send them packing.

He warned the Deputy President against using him as a walking stick on his campaigns and campaign for Jubilee without bringing in NASA.

“I want to answer the Deputy President over the allegations he made against me in Makueni. He said Kalonzo is on a losing team. I nevertheless want to remind him that it is Jubilee will lose instead. Jubilee will lose the Presidency because of him. William Ruto, I want to categorically state here that people don’t like you anymore because they are tired of politics of hate” Said Kalonzo.

Jacaranda rally was the first official NASA rally after IEBC cleared Prime Minister Raila Odinga and his Deputy Kalonzo Musyoka to vie for Presidency. Other principals in attendance were Amani National Coalition leader Musalia Mudavadi, Mashinani Party leader and Bomet Governor Isaac Ruto, and Ford Kenya Chief Moses Wetangula.

PHOTO OF THE DAY: How DP Ruto Watched Raila Kalonzo Present Nomination Papers to IEBC Chairman at ICC

By F Mirikau
When I saw Jubilee mini-bloggers and sympathisers running propaganda of how Hon. Kalonzo Musyoka’s name was on IEBCs’ list of Presidential candidates on Wiper ticket, I quietly laughed and awaited the D-Day to shut their beaks down.

My laughter became more hysterical when I saw one of the Presidential candidates, Prezo Nazlin Umar buying the cheap allegations and used it to paint betrayal on the NASA Principals.

It’s now official. IEBC clears NASA flag bearer Hon. Raila Amollo Odinga and his Deputy in command Hon. Kalonzo Musyoka to run for the top job in the country. WHO’S LAUGHING NOW?

NASA Presidential flag bearer Raila Odinga has warned IEBC Chairman Wafula Chebukati against rigging the August 8 Presidential election in favor of the incumbent Uhuru Kenyatta.
Speaking after he was declared fit to run for The Presidency by IEBC, Prime Minister Raila Odinga asked Chebukati and his team to play neutral and eschew being used by the incumbent to compromise the elections in his favor.

“On behalf of the entire NASA team, I would like to thank you for clearing us. I also want to remind you that even as we go for this election, your role will be key. As NASA family, we will only accept elections that reflect the true wishes of the people. You must play your role well so that history can be kind to you someday. We do not expect a repeat of what happened in previous elections where elections are compromised to the advantage of the incumbent. The hope and future of our country is in your hands and it is you who will determine its direction” Said Raila

About Raila’s Security Team

By Onyango Ochieng Jr.
Those men you see escorting Raila’s black V8 are bad news, carrying very very lethal piece of metals that if you try anything funny …..I mean…anything funny…trust me even Satan who gave you a call will be surprised at the supersonic speed you arrived in hell.

That car itself is thoroughly armoured, and Baba himself is protected by among others ….let me no say this one, its too sensitive.

Now if you shoot that car, it can withstand rapid fire from here to Kisumu and back and can also run on a flat tire up to Dar.

That car is intelligent, it is clever…it detects bumps, darkness and potholes then auto adjusts its ground clearance. It has a panic button, it even detect haters when moving in their territory.

That car is more brilliant than half of Uhuru’s cabinet, it is even more intelligent than half of all permanent secretaries combined.

I wrote a letter to Raila requesting him to donate that car so that Uhuru could appoint it the Chief Cabinet secretary( minister for devolution.) If anything that car is clever than Qnjuri today, tomorrow and the next 10,000 days to come.

That V8 can drive to hell and survive Satan’s fire….and come back with occupants safe and sound. Baaaaaaba yawa Baaaaaaaaaaaba wachni THEKO.
