The crowded Jubilee Party field is increasingly thinning out after Dagoretti North MP Dennis Waweru pulled out of the Nairobi gubernatorial race with sources saying he has been forced to endorse Peter Kenneth.
Waweru is said to have closed down his gubernatorial secretariat, and exited all WhatsApp groups he joined for his bid.
Those who had earlier angled for the seat include former Speaker Kenneth Marende, Water CS Eugene Wamalwa and former Nairobi Town Clerk Philip Kisia.
Nairobi Senator Mike Sonko, former TNA Chair and nominated MP Johnson Sakaja, businesswoman Esther Passaris and former aide of Prime Minister Raila Odinga (turned rebel) Miguna Miguna are still in the race.
So is incumbent Nairobi governor Dr. Evans Kidero and Kenneth, a late entrant. Little is known of Haroun Mwau, who was also rumored to be in the race.
Waweru had been initially endorsed by ‘city fathers’, a group of influential Kikuyu businessmen and MPs but who last week decamped to Peter Kenneth’s camp.
According to sources, a fierce altercation between Waweru and the group occurred last week in a city hotel during which he was reminded that he is gay, as in, a homo. Calls to Waweru to clarify these claims have gone unanswered.
Kenneth appears to be the presumptive heir to President Uhuru, hence is being positioned in time to take over, should President Uhuru win re-election.
